Some FAQ about our services:

Who is running this site, and why?
Return to FAQ

My name is Mark Frasher and I am the owner of Socalmartialarts.com. I have lived in Southern California my entire life (except while in the Army) and have been studying martial arts for over 8 years. My goal is to promote a martial arts community in Socal, and help schools promote themselves.

My martial arts training consist of 2 years of Judo, 6 months of Tae Kwon Do, 3 years of Kempo Karate, and 4 years of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. During the last two years, I have also started training Muay Thai and MMA. I have competed in many different tournaments, to include 5 pankration fights with a record of 3-2.

I spent 4 years in the U.S. Army from 1995-1999, as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division. Professionally, I am a member of a very large telecommunication company's management team. I have worked in a supervisory capacity for more than 7 years, and have had as many as 70 direct reports under my supervision. I hold two degrees, and combined with my work experience, I have developed skills necessary to adapt and succeed in today's business environment.

In March of 2008, I started this site because I wanted to be more involved with martial arts. My long term goal is to open my own school, but until then, this site will have to do. So I took classes and spent countless hours learning web design, and voila! Socalmartialarts.com was born.

Will I receive personal and qualified support?
Return to FAQ

Absolutely. A personal pet peeve of mine is bad customer service. I value the relationships formed in business more than the revenue itself. I respond personally to all emails, and build all of the pages myself. If you have questions, ask them, and I will answer.

Above all, I believe life and business should be conducted with a strong sense of ethics. I also believe in the importance of good customer service and the impact that it has on a business' ability to succeed. You can rest assured that I will respond to your communications, and will personally work to make sure you are satisfied.

Please tell me more about the school profiles.
Return to FAQ

Each profile will include the following: You can cancel your profile at any time. There is also a 30 day, full refund guarantee if you are not satisfied, with no questions asked.

Once completing the payment portion of the process, you will be re-directed to an instructions page and profile form. Simply follow the instructions, and complete the form. Once you submit the form you will be asked to email me any photos you wish to include in the profile so I can create the page.

You can update your profile via the "updates and comments" section at any time. Each update creates a new page on your profile and you can add a photo to each one of these pages.

If you wish to edit the main section of your profile, or add a picture, all you have to do is email me the edit or new photo and it will be added shortly.

Why do you create and update the profiles yourself?
Return to FAQ

This is a more complicated answer. Basically, it all boils down to getting the profiles to rank high in the search engines.

Each profile I create is optimized for the search engine, and needs to have meticulous balance of content that the search engines look for. This includes things such as 'alt tags', 'keywords', 'keyword density', 'H1 tags', and more. A proper balance of these items helps ensure that search engines such as Google and Yahoo will rank a page higher than others.

If I can't control the optimization, the chances of getting a high ranked page diminish greatly. See some of the results:

Take a moment to check how some of the current profiles rank at Google and Yahoo.

Not too shabby huh? Your profile can be used as a "mini-website" or as a compliment to your own. Being found for multiple search terms only increases the amount of exposure your school gets.

Who is allowed to comment on my profile?
Return to FAQ
This is totally up to you. You can choose to allow all visitors to comment, or nobody at all. If you want to be the only one adding updates/comments, that's fine too. You will choose this option when setting up your profile.

Explain the monthly charge...
Return to FAQ
This site is a labor of love for me, really. At a maximum of $120.00 a year, the cost of adding a profile to is definately disproportionate to the service you will be receiving. Especially when you consider that just one student sign-up will more than cover the cost of adverstising on this site at least 5x over.

Moreover, I earn literal pennies off of the Google ads you see on some of the pages, but not nearly enough to cover the associated cost of running this site. The monthly charges are applied to cover hosting fees, software updates and purchases, and a small compliment of labor.

Why does this site rank so well with search engines?
Return to FAQ
In one word: well planned search engine optimization (SEO). Ok, that's 5 words. The point is that this site is meticulously designed to rank highly in search engine results pages for martial arts related topics, specifically in Southern California. I do this by optimizing the pages using the best keywords, page content, and off page criteria that search engines look for in websites.

This same approach is used when each profile is built. This adds value to your profile because it creates an increased opportunity for web searchers to find your school on the web. And nothing beats than increased advertising and exposure for small businesses.

So what makes this site different?
Return to FAQ
Yes, there are other martial arts directories on the web. But they are NOT geographically specific. Other school directories are at a national level and are incomplete. They require that schools register with them in order to be listed. At Socalmartialarts.com, we've listed every school we could find, no matter what, becasue we want to provide readers with the most pertinent information available. What's even better is that we only list schools in Southern California.

Moreover, this site is managed and written by a dedicated martial artist, not some faceless webmaster looking for a quick profit. With a vested and personal interest in martial arts, you can feel confident that you are working with someone that understands your line of work.

Is internet advertising important?
Return to FAQ
"The internet has become our phone book, dictionary, encyclopedia, sales brochure, research vehicle and back fence for gossip. Like it or not, you're going to have to do a better job online if you want to flex your muscles in 2008."

Roy H. Williams, the Monday Morning Memo

Advertising in the yellow pages?
Return to FAQ
"But the cost of display ads varies from city to city. In Manhattan, New York, a small, one-inch space listing would cost you about $2,500, and you could pay as much as $92,000 for a full-page display ad. But that same one-inch space listing in Manhattan, Kansas, would cost just $252, and a full-page display ad would be about $11,200."
