The Southern California Martial Arts convention was held on October 11th and 12th.
The show held a no-gi submission grappling tournament and was also host to a number of vendors featuring martial arts schools,
MMA clothing, supplements, and more. Held at the Del Mar fairgrounds, the majority of competitors, participating schools,
and fans all seemed to come from the San Diego area.
Being the first of its kind, there was definately opportunity for this martial arts showcase to well. The event did go off as planned, and the tournament
was organized and professional. There were however, a few shortcomings of note. Mainly, the tournament spectators were limited to two small sections of bleachers.
This presented what seemed to be a significant problem as many people were hopping up on their toes to get a glipse of the action. During some of the more notable pro
matches, the crowd was packed tightly around the mat causing viewers to cramp in together.
One could also make a case against the facilities for the convention attendees as well. Located in a far corner was a small consession stand. And
although they were small in size, they were large in price. A cheesburger, chips, and coke would of cost you 11.50; I know, I paid it. The bathrooms were
clean, but only one set resided on the far end of the building behind the extravagently priced, but mini-consession stand.
I can't honestly say that it wasn't enjoyable for an avid martial arts enthusiast though. If you wanted to pay to see a grappling tournament, browse vendors,
and watch a number of martial arts demonstrations, then you would have gotten your monies worth. In my personal opinion, the Capoeira demonstration definately stole
the show. While many may contend that Capoeira isn't a true martial art, or that is all for show, I will contend that the performers mustered the largest crowd of the day
and also the largest applause. The Capoeira demonstration was held by Capoeira Brasil San Diego.
They weren't the only demonstrations to speak of though. Other demonstrations included kung-fu, muay thai, tai-chi,
weapon demonstrations, and krav maga by Krav Maga San Diego.
Hopefully there will be a second SCMA convention. I enjoy the prospect of an annual martial arts convention here in Southern California's backyard. Let's
just all hope next time, the spectator accomodations will be a bit better, and that the organizers don't forget to leave media passes at will call...
