At Ralph Gracie Jiu-Jitsu of Anaheim, students are taught systematically from beginner to advanced in such a way that facilitates sustained and continued growth in martial arts. With a heavy mixture of beginning, intermediate, and advanced classes spread over 7 days a week, combined with a healthy and relaxed atmosphere, Ralph Gracie Jiu-Jitsu provides a great environment for anyone.

Training, courtesy, and a friendly environment are staples of Ralph Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. The studio boast two training areas (upstairs and downstairs), a lounge area, bleachers for spectators, and clean facilities. Students are encouraged not only to to train hard, but to have fun and make friends too.

Styles taught are Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai Kickboxing, and traditional boxing. With the main style taught being Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the Ralph Gracie academy incorporates Gi and No-Gi classes as an added benefit. Classes taught are approximately 1 to 1-1/2 hours in length, and generally follow the format of warm up and instruction, ending with an optional sparring session.

Beginners classes focus on the core fundamentals of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and are closely monitored by the instructors to gauge the student's progress. Students learn and practice submissions, escapes, positioning and self defense. The fundamentals class is directed not only for the beginner but also for the more advanced students to sharpen basic techniques.

Once the student has been invited, the student is welcome to attend both the beginner classes as well as the intermediate/advanced class. The intermediate/advanced classes will vary each night. Please check the schedule for class specifics. This class is designed for students interested in advanced techniques for competition and self-defense. Students learn and practice advanced sweeps, submissions, escapes and counters, how to reverse an attacker and how to force their opponent into submission. Detailed instruction in technique, specific drilling, and position advancement are the main focus of this class. Competition is encouraged, but not required.

Joining this academy means so much more than learning top level BJJ though. Its about becoming part of the family. Learning self defense and martial arts is the premise of the academy, of course, but what really makes this gym special is the relationships that are formed there. Each day, you are greeted with a smile and treated with the utmost respect. Ralph Gracie Jiu-Jitsu also regularly host parties and get-togethers that helps to bond the students, staff, and instructors. Ralph Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is not only for adults, children are welcome too. Children's classes are designed to teach the kids physical fitness, self-defense, social skills, and to have fun!

Brad Jackson

Brad Jackson

Brad began his martial arts training at the tender age of 6. He studied Karate for 10 years, and wrestled for 2 years. In 1993, Brad began training under the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu system and hasn't stopped since. In 2000, Brad earned the famed black belt rank in BJJ, and in 2001 he opened the Ralph Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Placentia, Ca. With the school now located in Anaheim, Brad can proudly claim that his hard work and dedication has rendered one of the best BJJ schools in Orange County.

Top level Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is not what seperates Brad from other instructors. It's his dedication, and ability to make students feel comfortable as they learn new techniques. Time and time again, BJJ enthusiast exclaim how Brad has helped bring their game to a new level, learned in a great environment.

Here is a quote taken from Sherdog.com:

"I also off set class training with training privates with Ralph Gracie black belt Brad Jackson. Brad is an amazing instructor and I can see why Ralph Gracie O.C. is coming home with so many medal victories! Brad is an encyclopedia of Jiu-Jitsu and even though I only had a week I relazied how he could accelerate my Jiu-Jitsu game ten-fold! Brad does a fantastic job of teaching and illustrating the technique and holds nothing back. Brad has incredible insight into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and I think he could make the difference in anyones training. It was a pleasure to train with Brad."

Bruno Paulista

Bruno Paulista

Bruno Paulista is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu system. Bruno started training Jiu-Jitsu in January of 2000, and quickly earned his black belt in 2006 from Professor Alexander Souza. Bruno has been involved at all levels of BJJ competition, with his most notable accomplishment being his win at the 2007 No-Gi world championships that included a final match victory over world-famous Jeff Monson.

If you ask Bruno though, he will tell you that his best personal accomplishment is when he watches his students win and better themselves in life and BJJ. Self respect, determination, and a "never say die" attitude is what drives him. Being open and willing to learn, whether in class or in competition, is important for development according to Bruno. Helping his students is his reward.

What is BJJ?

The premise of BJJ is that most of the advantage of a larger, stronger .opponent comes from superior reach and more powerful strikes, both of which are somewhat negated when grappling on the ground. The BJJ style includes effective use of the guard position to defend oneself from the bottom position, and passing the guard to dominate from top position with side control, mount, and back mount positions. This system of maneuvering and manipulation can be likened to a form of chess when performed by two experienced practitioners. A submission hold would be the equivalent of checkmate.

BJJ permits all the techniques that judo allows to take the fight to the ground. Once on the ground the opponents can continue to fight, and winning is usually the result of one participant "tapping out". In sport competition, matches are timed and can also be won by outscoring your oppenent by gaining dominent positions, and completing certain manuevers.
