Types of Martial Arts

Disciplines are typically thought of as a fighting styles. This is obvious since the literal meaning of the word Martial is derived from the word Mars, the Roman God of War. So, the term Martial Arts literally means Arts of War.

There are many different types of martial arts, originating from all over the globe. The most common impression is that martial arts finds it's roots in eastern Asia, this is not always necessarily true however. Many martial arts styles originated elsewhere, such as Europe, Brazil, and North America.

Today, martial arts are often taught as a system of self defense, not offense. Not all styles or practices are designed specifically for combat however. Many self defense martial arts styles include KATAS, forms, and other types of movements or demonstrations that can be used for demonstrations, practice, or personal serenity.
